Someone asked how our Fourth of July party turned out. We had a GRRREAT time! First of all, the weather was very pleasant after months of a colder than normal spring. We even had to dig out the sunscreen.
We prepped a bit the day before so when the clock hit 12 noon, we blocked off the street on either end and took over the road. Since my house is on the corner of a nice wide residential street intersection, with a neighborhood park exactly opposite my house, it’s ideal for having a street party. Even if it had rained, we would have just tarped the whole area. As people who live in the Seattle area know, you don’t cancel an event just because it’s raining J
We put up a canopy for our karaoke host, Michael Coleman, to set up his equipment under and another canopy to cover our food tables. I had fun decorating the music canopy with some inexpensive flower leis from the dollar store that I restrung into one long strand.
We put up our umbrella from the back patio to shade the singers at the microphone in front of the monitors so we didn’t melt in the sun and could see the words on the screen.
We had over 75 people show up for the 8 and ½ hours that we were out there. The songs were continuous and we got a few people up singing karaoke for the first time –think the youngest one was about four.
Our host was fantastic. He kept track of the rotation and as our turn got closer, he’d come and ask us what we were going to sing. Michael has hosted for us before (years ago for my son’s high school graduation party with all his friends from theatre – BEST PARTY I EVER GAVE) and he prefers to do shows outside of the bar atmosphere. He’s affordable, has state-of-the-art equipment and has every song you can think of.
Since the sound was amplified, we had neighbors show up who don’t usually join in a neighborhood function. With the karaoke group invited, we had quite a few of them bring their entire families so we were guaranteed singers at the microphone for all those hours. It was nice to meet them because since we sing so much in bars, later at night, it was a rare opportunity for them to be included.
While the singing was going on, we had a constant variety of food going – the BBQ was pretty busy and I made a ton of food to add to the potluck items friends brought. I made a red, white and blue jello/angel food cake triffle, three platters of Tex-Mex dip, 50 Rice Krispy bears, a potluck pasta salad, and my son even made some jello shots for the late afternoon, early evening.
The kids and adults were entertained by my standard picnic past-times – seven bubble wands to make three-foot round bubbles, or a stream that would cross the whole road and 200 water balloons. You can NEVER have enough water balloons. We didn’t get around to playing water balloon volleyball but we did have several distance tosses and a competition with the gals and then the guys to see who could throw their balloon the farthest. They are always a HUGE hit with the kids. We also had badminton set up on the front yard but it was too breezy and too hot for me to play this year.
As we were winding down, Chuck got up and sang the “Electric Slide” by request and a group of friends were out in the street dancing. As soon as I saw Brent had his video running, I knew it was time to hide out. And yes, he posted it on Facebook. Dancing is not one of my strong points, especially when I’ve had a few glasses of wine.
With so many hands, we were able to clean up quite quickly at the end and disperse to go watch all the legal fireworks shows in the area. Chuck and I ended up at Angle Lake with Mark out on his brothers’ dock watching the display over the lake on the balmiest of nights.
The feedback was 100% positive and we’ll be doing it again next year.
Hi Deb,
ReplyDeleteI´m one of Barbaras coaching class students and I´d like to tell you at first:
I wish I had been there on your karaoke-party - it sounds absolutely great ( I´ve sung in choirs for over 30 years, but I never did karaoke, although I´d like to do it since I heard about it ).
So here are my ideas:
You could offer your karaoke-party to a lot of event-planners for example in travel business ( a cheap way to see the world for you ), youth-centers, schools ( schol-parties need a make-up, I think), opening-events of furniture-houses ( for families ( IKEA??), wedding-planners ( karaoke makes you stick together as you and your honey show ), karaoke-bars to bring everybody up to stage ( like a karaoke-animateur) and you could travel with this offer all over the world to bring your wounderful message to everybody ( karaoky helps to stay healthy in any way ).
That´s all for today - if youll come to Germany (Francfort) with your party, I´ll be there:-))
What a great thing!!!
Cheers,
Anne
here I am again - sorry, I forgot something to mention:
ReplyDeleteone thing is bringing up your karaoke-message by doing it and you´ll reach interested people.
The other thing is to reach people, who aren´t interested by now and to convince them to try it and who are able to publish your message in the right way. These people could be helpers, teachers, trainers, doctors - in germany there is a foundation called " humour helps healing" by Eckehard von Hirschhausen ( he´s creative medical-comedian,who talks very smart and funny about luck in life - maybe you can contact him: http://hirschhausen.com/).
And you could contact an accapella-group called " wise-guys", who are in different projects on the way with their singing-mission, too. Both of them sometimes work together and are always interested in new things on their way.
And: we have in our town a school-project called "primacanta" for primary-school-kids, if your are interested I could make a contact for you to the foundation of it and maybe you could make a "primacanta-karaoke-party" in our lovely town Francfort and I know a film-maker, who had just filmed about our music-work with children (I´m a music-teacher, you have to know )- just wounderful, maybe she could make a docu-movie about your karaoke-event for kids.
I have to stop now - or never:-)- but I´m looking forward to your answer, if you like.
Best regards,
Anne
hi debra,
ReplyDeleteI see anne had just the same idea with the partys as I posted a minute ago in your facebook account.
do you have photos taken of your party? can you post it in facebook and add them to the blog? you also mentioned someone with a camera. do you really have a video? this is great for youtube! but also to add it to your blog! I would love to see how all the wonderful things you arranged look like! maybe some others too!
so my idea is similar: why don't you arrange streetparties for your favourite karaoke locations? you can work together with michael coleman, you mentioned, f.e.
and when you put some videos about it on youtube you have a perfect publicity. you can post the link to all locations and organisations where you want to offer a party. and you can also offer workshops for people who want to arrange such a party. you can do some short videolessons on youtube.
and anne is completely right that your partys are perfect for weddings and all the other events. what do you think about it?
loving regards, claudia
hi debra,
ReplyDeletedid I mention that you're a good writer? I can almost see the things you describe :-)
two days ago I posted some more ideas in the comments of "have you sung lately?" did you see what barbara wrote there?
lg, claudia
my fellow student at barbaras coaching class, christiane, asked me to post her ideas for you. here they are:
ReplyDeleteHere a few ideas:
I find you should get doctors together and have them sing – and learn about the health benefits. Then they will tell their patients (at least those doctors who are really interested in healthy people).
Go to hospitals. Offer free karaoke there where people are physically able to do that (e.g. broken arm, twisted leg). This doesn’t make money right away (or maybe you could have them pay something) but if it helped people in this bad situation, they will come to your parties and courses later.
If you are into children, go to the children’s clinic. If you would like to help healing certain diseases, go to those departments. Helping people to get healthier seemed a second mission you have.
Another one: Go to old people’s homes. I never forget the happy face of my grandmother when I saw her in that singing group they had for 1hr a week (only!!!). With advanced Alzheimer, it was old childrens’ songs they sang. But they were in bliss.
Not all of the people there have Alzheimer or can’t see/hear anymore. Actually a lot are still fine physically, just lonely. Some might be physically handicapped and can’t go far. These homes or resorts are looking for events they can offer. That would be your party!
And lastly: Get people to write to you how much they loved your party or course and what they find karaoke singing helped them with. Post these very authentic statements on your blog.
Wishing you a lot of success! Christiane
Hi Debra,
ReplyDeletewow, nice to see that there are some ideas I also had.
Here is one more:
- maybe it would be fun to create a Karaoke Network Platform in the Internet for other Karaoke Fans.
Here the ideas to earn some money with it:
- Karaoke bars can pay for adds or for
- putting in infos when the next event takes place
- Karaoke Equipmentcompanies can make adds as well
- members get a lot of infos from you, because you are an insider, so you can take some memberfee
- you can chat once in a while
- you can show a map with all registered Karaokebars in US or Worldwide (I wouldn't know where to go to if I would like to sing)
- members can upload viedeos
etc., etc.
I think it's great, that you can help people.
